Vodafone has launched the first 5G “open RAN” site in the UK, as the government and telecoms groups look for ways to boost competition after barring Chinese group Huawei from networks.
Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone UK. said “Not only have we begun the first scaled deployment in the UK, but we have also installed the first 5G Open RAN site. Open RAN is now a real-world technology and it is truly exciting to see this technology flourish.”
Samsung and NEC, both won contracts to supply hardware and software. Dell, NEC, Evenstar and Wind River will also provide products and services, while US group Keysight Technologies and France’s Capgemini will integrate the network.
In the coming months Vodafone will be testing the vRAN telco-grade performance metrics and features like security, inter-Radio Access Technology (inter-RAT) mobility and inter-frequency handover. Also in the first half of 2022, the partners will test dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) and E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC).
