What is Massive MIMO?
Massive MIMO equips the gNB with a very large number of antenna elements — typically 32, 64, 128, or more — enabling simultaneous service of multiple UEs through spatial multiplexing (MU-MIMO), while delivering significant beamforming gain and interference suppression. It is the single most impactful 5G NR technology for improving network capacity and spectral efficiency.
How Does Massive MIMO Work?
With many more antennas than served users, Massive MIMO can create very accurate, narrow beams directed precisely at each UE using digital or hybrid beamforming. The large antenna array also provides substantial array gain (up to 18 dBi for 64 elements), improving coverage. MU-MIMO allows the gNB to serve 8–16 users simultaneously on the same time-frequency resource block.
Use Cases
5G NR macro cell deployments (typically 64T64R or 32T32R Active Antenna Units), dense urban capacity improvement, extending coverage at cell edges, eMBB peak rate delivery.
