Ericsson is commited to lead the industrialization of Open RAN

Ericsson is making a substantial commitment to integrate open fronthaul compatibility into its cloud RAN and radio product lineup, commencing in 2024. This strategic move underscores the company’s dedication to spearheading the industrialization of open RAN.

Ericsson has actively collaborated with the industry, engaging with the O-RAN Alliance to achieve a significant milestone in the development of the next-generation open fronthaul interface. This interface is essential for delivering scalable performance to open RAN systems.

The vendor has already deployed over 1 million radios, all equipped with the necessary hardware to support the forthcoming open fronthaul technology. With the introduction of new radio platforms in the current year, Ericsson now boasts a comprehensive open RAN-ready portfolio, spanning its Massive MIMO and remote radio offerings. Furthermore, the company asserts its leadership in industrialization by prioritizing cloudification, open fronthaul, and open management to enhance network programmability.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, believes that the most significant revolution in future mobile networks lies in the adoption of cloud-based open networks. These networks will pave the way for fully programmable mobile networks, marking a transformative step in the industry.

Ericsson believes that future networks need to be increasingly resilient, open, sustainable, and intelligent. Open RAN plays an important role in achieving this vision, and Ericsson is leading the industrialization of the three pillars of Open RAN: cloudification, open fronthaul and open management for network programmability.
