Verizon Achieves Breakthrough in Device to Satellite Video Calling

On February 24, 2025, in Midland, Texas, Verizon and AST SpaceMobile reached a significant milestone in mobile communications. The two companies successfully conducted a live video call linking two mobile devices—one connected via satellite using AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 2 and the other on Verizon’s extensive terrestrial network. While Verizon’s network already covers over 99% of the U.S. population, this demonstration pushes the boundaries by incorporating satellite connectivity to provide enhanced service in areas lacking traditional cellular coverage.

Hans Vestberg, Verizon’s Chairman and CEO, stated that this achievement heralds a new era for hybrid communications. “This breakthrough is not just about texting; it’s about enabling voice calls, video chats, and file transfers even in remote locations where standard networks might fall short,” he explained.

Joe Russo, EVP & President of Global Network and Technology at Verizon, added that the company’s team has worked relentlessly to develop a robust satellite-to-device data connection. This initiative is part of Verizon’s broader commitment to ensuring customers enjoy reliable connectivity wherever they are—whether in isolated wilderness areas or remote communities.

This pioneering video call test follows recent approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which now permits AST SpaceMobile to utilize Verizon’s spectrum for testing. Thanks to this authorization, AST SpaceMobile’s first five commercial BlueBird satellites in low Earth orbit can now trial full cellular capabilities—including voice, data, and video services—with standard smartphones.

Verizon Communications Inc. continues to empower millions of customers by delivering innovative network solutions. Headquartered in New York City and serving nearly all Fortune 500 companies worldwide, the company reported revenues of $134.8 billion in 2024. With ongoing advancements, Verizon remains dedicated to enhancing connectivity for today’s needs and tomorrow’s challenges.
