In a bold move reshaping mobile connectivity in Canada, Rogers Communications has officially launched its Direct-to-Cell (D2C) satellite messaging service, offering nationwide coverageβeven in the most remote areas.
Powered by LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites from SpaceXβs Starlink and Lynk Global, and seamlessly integrated into Rogersβ terrestrial wireless network, this service positions Canada at the forefront of next-generation telecom innovation.
π Rogers Satellite: Whatβs on Offer?
From July to October 2025, all Canadians can use the service for free, enabling:
- Standard text messaging
- Emergency SMS alerts (including in areas without traditional coverage)
Future service updates will include:
- Mobile apps
- Data services
- Voice and emergency 911 calling
After the free trial period:
- It will remain free for Rogers Ultimate Plan subscribers
- Other customers can subscribe for $15/month
- Beta testers benefit from a $5/month discount during the first year
π But Will Canadians Actually Pay?
To explore market readiness, Analysys Mason conducted a focused survey among Canadian adults in July 2025. The findings reveal key insights into consumer sentiment:
π£ 77% of adults expressed interest in satellite messaging
π₯ Only 11% would pay for basic D2C messaging or voice
π₯ A more promising 31% would pay for fast satellite mobile internet
