Globe is accelerating its efforts to keep every Filipino connected—wherever they may be—by expanding its testing of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), or satellite-enabled mobile services.
Through collaborations with leading Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers, Globe is exploring Direct-to-Cellular (D2C) or Satellite-to-Phone (Sat2Phone) technology. This innovation allows ordinary mobile phones to connect directly to satellites without requiring any additional hardware, opening the door to seamless connectivity in areas beyond the reach of traditional towers.
These continued trials highlight Globe’s proactive approach to bringing next-generation connectivity to remote, underserved, and geographically challenging regions—ensuring that even the most isolated communities have access to essential communications.
Globe has already reached several key milestones in this space, including the first satellite-based SMS and voice service trials in the Philippines, as well as successful demonstrations of early Sat2Phone capabilities. Its latest phase of testing incorporates advanced NTN technology aligned with 3GPP pre-Release 17, preparing the organization for the future commercial launch of satellite-to-phone services.
A major recent achievement is Globe’s live pilot trial with Lynk Global, which validated satellite-enabled voice calling using Lynk’s LEO constellation. The successful tests underscore the growing feasibility of satellite-powered mobile connectivity and pave the way for broader deployment in the coming years.
“Innovation is at the core of Globe’s mission,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovation. “By advancing satellite-to-phone connectivity, we are ensuring that no Filipino is left behind—especially those living in hard-to-reach areas where traditional networks are challenging to build. This technology moves us closer to truly universal connectivity.”
Beyond everyday communications, Globe views NTN as a critical foundation for disaster response and emergency communications, offering rapid, reliable links when ground infrastructure is compromised—a vital capability in a country highly prone to natural disasters.
Guided by Alagang Globe, the company continues to invest in technologies that uplift people and communities, contributing to a more inclusive, resilient, and digitally empowered Philippines.
