M1 Launches True 5G Standalone Network

On 27/07/2021, Singapore operator M1 has actually launched the real 5G Standalaone network (SA) with 50% coverage across the island.

M1 originally introduced its 5G non-standalone (NSA) solutions in 2020, leveraging its 4G network infrastructure to deliver some early 5G capabilities. The True 5G SA network introduced today operates independently of M1’s 4G network infrastructure to provide a boosted suite of capabilities.

According to M1, its True 5G service is up to 10 times faster than the 4G network as well as 4 times quicker than the 5G NSA network. It is also 50% more responsive compared to 4G and 5G NSA networks, providing customers a lag-free experience.

Also, M1 consumers on its new 5G SA network get to be among the very first individuals in the world to use Voice over 5G New Radio (VoNR). VoNR is the 5G SA matching of VoLTE, supplying “crystal clear high definition” voice calls and faster call setup time when compared to VoLTE. However, VoNR is currently exclusive to supported Samsung devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra.

Both 5G SA and 5G NSA supplied by local telcos are all genuinely 5G – the difference comes from the networking devices utilized to push out 5G speeds. 5G NSA partly counts on existing 4G equipment to sustain its network, while 5G SA requires 5G network equipment exclusively made to respond to more 5G Native use cases.
The demand to set up new equipements for 5G SA is greatly why all three telcos need time to deploy the network around Singapore with SA functionalities.
Previously, M1 said  that their 5G SA network relies on Nokia’s 5G Core infrastructure. The telco has been performing 5G trials as early as 2018, with 15 trials and use cases across consumer, enterprise, and government sectors
