IBW and OBW in 5G, difference between Frequency Range

Frequency Range:

IBW and OBW refers to bandwidth defined by the frequency range within which the Base Station can be operated, defined by the band-pass filter of the BS, e.g. 3.4 – 3.8 GHz (400 MHz)

Instantaneous BandWidth (IBW):

it refers to the bandwidth in which all frequency components can be simultaneously  analyzed it is defined by the frequency boundaries of the operating band(s)

It determines the spectrum span of a carrier within the operating bandwidth and is a major measure of the capability of an RF module to support discontinuous spectrums.

IBM is mainly limited by the operating bandwidth of the power amplifier (PA) and the digital sampling frequency of the RF module.

=> this a major criteria in case of non-contiguous spectrum

Occupied BandWidth (OBW):

it refers to the bandwidth occupied by the base station when operated, defined by the sum of the active bandwidths of the band allocation(s) operated

In other words, OBW refers to a frequency band range in which the radio frequency module can receive and transmit, and may also be understood as a filter bandwidth of the radio frequency module. The frequency that can be configured for the RF module is “sliding” within the filter bandwidth range. The operating bandwidth is mainly determined by the TX/RX filter and TX/RX duplexer of the RF front end.

In all cases:

Frequency Range > IBW > OBW
