Overview of 5G VoNR Solutions

In contrast with other 5G voice solutions, VoNR is implemented through NR networks as its name implies. By using VoNR, a 5G network can provide voice services in addition to data services. Since 5G supports only packet switching as 4G does, 5G users still need to access the IMS to use voice services.

In 4G, users access the IMS through the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), while in 5G, they access the IMS through the 5G Core (5GC).

In SA networking, 5G networks can support voice services, and users can access the IMS through the 5GC rather than the EPC. However, to construct a 5G SA network, operators must deploy both the NR network and 5GC, which means that the cost is high. As such, an SA network cannot be built up with one step.

In the initial phase of SA network construction, the NR coverage is insufficient and VoNR is notavailable. In this case, the Evolved Packet System Fallback (EPS FB) solution is used as a transition,and once the NR network can provide continuous signal coverage, VoNR can be deployed.

EPS Fallback

EPS FB is used to ensure voice continuity and prevent the user experience from deteriorating, which is attributed to frequent handovers between 5G and 4G networks in the initial phase of 5G network deployment. This solution is a transitional solution for the evolution from VoLTE to VoNR. When a user initiates a call under the NR converge, the user falls back to a 4G network to continue the call through VoLTE. After the call ends, the user returns to the 5G network. EPS FB increases the call setup delay and forces data services to fall back to 4G during a call, which affects the user experience.

VoNR :

As the NR coverage increases, the VoNR solution can be used to provide voice services. Users can directly make calls on the 5G network without falling back to 4G, thereby shortening the call setup delay. In addition, a large number of base stations are deployed to enhance 5G signals. Users can experience high-quality audio and video call services and enjoy high-speed seamless data services at the same time. VoNR is the ultimate voice solution for 5G.
