Amazon has officially rebranded its large-scale satellite broadband initiative: Project Kuiper will now be known as Amazon Leo, a name designed to better reflect its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ambitions. Alongside the new brand, Amazon also introduced three customer terminals—Leo Nano, Leo Pro, and Leo Ultra—targeting different performance and enterprise needs.
According to Rajeev Badyal, VP at Amazon Leo, the original “Project Kuiper” name was only intended as an internal codename during early development. The shift to Amazon Leo marks its transition into a fully commercial product line. Badyal described the rebranding as a “simple nod” to the LEO constellation architecture.
📅 Service Rollout: Enterprise in 2025, Wider Launch in 2026
Amazon says the first Amazon Leo services will be available to select enterprise customers by late 2025, with a broader commercial rollout planned for 2026. This positions Amazon Leo as one of the major upcoming players in the satellite broadband and enterprise connectivity market—competing with offerings like Starlink and OneWeb.
🛰️ Constellation Status
Amazon currently has 153 satellites in orbit, forming the early stages of the constellation. Once fully deployed, Amazon Leo will exceed 3,000 satellites, supporting global broadband services, edge connectivity, and enterprise-grade backhaul use cases.
🔥 A Timely Announcement
The timing of the announcement lines up interestingly with another milestone for Jeff Bezos: Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket achieved a flawless debut launch on November 13th, successfully delivering a NASA Mars mission and landing its booster on an ocean barge.
While Amazon didn’t explicitly connect the two events, the alignment certainly adds momentum to Amazon’s growing presence in the space and satellite communications ecosystem.
